Miten tiedät, onko ulkoinen hankejohtaja hyvä investointi?

How do you know if an external program manager is a good investment?

Let’s imagine a €6M ERP project that gets delayed by a year. What happens? 👉 The project organization continues for an extra year, adding €2M in additional costs 👉 The benefits start to materialize a year later, resulting in a €1M loss = The price tag of the delay is roughly €3M. This is just an example — but unfortunately, a very real one. I've seen this situation far too many times. After doing a calculation like this, it's crystal clear that it’s worth investing significantly to prevent delays. Hiring a project manager costs money, but the cost is ultimately small if that investment keeps the project on track. Of course, not even the best project manager can guarantee there won’t be surprises. But they have the best tools to ensure that: ✅ the project progresses on time and within budget ✅ the end result serves the users ✅ people adopt the change and actually start using the new solution So, the next time you're assigning roles for a project, take a moment to think — and calculate — the cost of a delay. You might be able to reduce the need for external consultants and recruitment on paper. But in practice, real savings rarely materialize. Would you want your heart surgery performed by a competent general practitioner instead of a heart surgeon? Probably not. Just as you shouldn’t entrust the heart of your organization — your ERP system — to inexperienced hands.Usually, investing in experience pays off. What other perspectives would you bring into the decision-making?
